Soft light, a quiet table and time to talk: romantic restaurants in London
London does romance in its own way. It's less about grand gestures and more about the right room: a candlelit table in Fitzrovia, a conservatory in Covent Garden with flowers all around, a tiny dining room above a Soho pub, an old wood-panelled grill in Mayfair. Many of the best tables for two here are small, hushed and easy to miss.
There's height when you want it, with a counter facing the skyline in the City and tall windows above the Square Mile, and river views in the west. There are hotel dining rooms where everything is done properly, long tasting menus that take the whole evening, and the odd place further out that's worth the journey, like Dysart Petersham, where the park just outside sets a calm mood.
Every restaurant here is in the MICHELIN Guide and well reviewed by diners, and 43 take bookings online. The smallest rooms have only a handful of tables, so book early for a Friday or Saturday, and earlier still around anniversaries and Valentine's Day.

How we chose
Romance isn't about the bill or the number of courses. It's a room where you can hear each other, light that's kind, a setting you'll remember and nobody nudging you out of the door.
So we read what every Michelin restaurant in London is like for an evening for two: the room, the light, the noise, the view and the pace, from our own notes and publicly available descriptions. The ones that felt right for two made the page, as long as they're well reviewed by diners too. Loud rooms, rushed service and places built for groups were left out, however good the cooking.
Beside each restaurant you'll see our own read on how formal it feels, drawn from publicly available descriptions, reviews and photos. It runs from Chill (come as you are) and Easy (a proper restaurant that stays relaxed) to Smart (polished, people make an effort) and Fancy (full ceremony). Tap it for more. Romance here leans polished: most of these rooms are Smart, and about one in six is Fancy.
Twelve are our favourites, grouped by the kind of evening you have in mind. Everything else follows by part of town, each with a line on why it works for two.
