Michelin restaurants that welcome your dog, in London

London has always been easy-going about dogs, thanks largely to its pubs, where a dog curled up by the bar is a familiar sight. That spirit carries further than you might expect, into neighbourhood bistros and some properly polished dining rooms.

These 36 Michelin restaurants say they welcome dogs, 23 of them inside, and every one is well reviewed by diners. Mayfair and St James's have the most, from HIDE and Murano to a bistro and hotel dining rooms. There are starred pubs too, The Harwood Arms and Kerfield Arms, sharing plates in Shoreditch, candlelit vegan tasting menus at Gauthier - Soho, and local favourites from Peckham to Clapham. Dinner by Heston Blumenthal, the only two-star here, welcomes dogs on its terrace.

Some places only take dogs outside, so mention yours when you book. 34 of them take bookings online, which makes that simple.

How we chose

By dog-friendly we mean a restaurant that says it welcomes dogs, either in the dining room or on its terrace. Most here let dogs inside, and we always say which.

Every restaurant is in the MICHELIN Guide, and diners rate each one highly on Google.

Beside each one you'll see our own read on how formal it feels, drawn from publicly available descriptions, reviews and photos. It runs from Chill (come as you are) and Easy (a proper restaurant that stays relaxed) to Smart (polished, people make an effort) and Fancy (full ceremony). Tap it for more. Most here are Smart, a good share are Easy, and a handful of Fancy rooms say yes too.

The page is grouped by part of town, busiest first. Within each, the places that welcome dogs inside come first, and those that only allow them on the terrace are listed last.

The biggest cluster: one-star HIDE and Murano, a smart bistro and hotel dining rooms, and a lively Georgian kitchen, with a couple welcoming dogs on the terrace only.

Top-floor seafood at Angler, a chef's-choice dinner at Casa Fofō in Dalston, and sharing plates in Shoreditch, plus a steak house in Leadenhall Market.

Knightsbridge, Chelsea & Kensington 6

Proper pub cooking at The Harwood Arms and polished Chelsea rooms, while Dinner by Heston Blumenthal and Cornus keep dogs on the terrace.

Islington & North 2

Two neighbourhood favourites: a classic French dining room and a buzzy spot with shared tables.

Notting Hill & West 1

One cosy, warmly run room in Notting Hill, with dogs welcome on the terrace.

Questions

Are dogs allowed in restaurants in the UK?

Yes, if the restaurant is happy to have them. There's no law keeping dogs out of dining rooms. Hygiene rules apply to kitchens, so it comes down to each owner.

Which restaurants in central London allow dogs?

Plenty, especially in Mayfair and St James's, where HIDE, Murano, Claro and chez Rose welcome dogs inside. In Soho, The Devonshire and Gauthier - Soho do too, while The Delaunay in Covent Garden welcomes them on its terrace.

Can I take my dog to a Michelin-starred pub?

Yes. The Harwood Arms and Kerfield Arms both hold a star and welcome dogs inside, and The Devonshire in Soho is a proper pub that does the same. Order a pint and settle in.

What does 'terrace only' mean?

Some restaurants welcome dogs outside but not in the dining room, including Dinner by Heston Blumenthal, Legado and Arlington. We mark these on each listing, so check before you book on a chilly evening.
